The magic of sitting by the fire pit, marshmallows toasting on sticks, wine in hand…

and why the fire pit at The Burrow at Wombat Bend is such a favourite with our guests.

It must be in our DNA, that staring mesmerised into dancing flames as logs gently readjust and settle in the fire pit, emitting the occasional hiss, is such soothing balm to us humans.  Focussed, we sit, sticks poised over orange-white fire flickering away, cocooned in the heady scented wood smoke, with the stillness of the cool night air, allowing the billabong chorus of frogs calling to one another to wash over us, basking in the warmth on our faces and the shining glow we all get when we’re fireside – it’s no wonder guests comment that sitting by the fire pit on the banks of our billabong is always a highlight of their stay.

As the sun starts to sink down over the billabong…

head outside and take your seats as the orchestra starts to tune up for the evening’s nightly performance that happens without fail, come rain or shine, every night of the year at Wombat Bend.  While fire pits are wonderful to sit around wherever you are, the location plays a critical part in your experience.  Witnessing the changing light and colours as day gives way to night at Wombat Bend is spectacular, and it’s a private moment to share as you’ll have the fire all to yourselves.  Rest your gaze out over the billabong, sensing the stillness of the property, no-one for miles, away from distractions, light pollution, noise – it’s just you, the nocturnal locals (frogs, possums, gliders, maybe a bat, or a trundling wombat) and a precious opportunity to tune-in to the enigmatic night world.

The unique sights and sounds of the Yarra Valley by night

It’s hard to imagine that every evening that world is happening, while we’re inside, internally focussed on our devices, missing the wonders going on outside our window.  So we love it when guests rug up in layers and head outside to sit and be; beanies on heads, blankets on knees, wine and marshmallows in hand, beside the dancing firelight to get to know this slice of the nocturnal Yarra Valley.  Our night sky, twinkling constellations, and energetic critter activity are all unique to Wombat Bend and that exact place and moment in time, and will form a gorgeous part of your unique experience that you’ll treasure once you’re back home, wherever that might be.
